The salmonella outbreak linked to tainted peanut butter that has sickened more than 450 people in the U.S. and Canada is now affecting pets.
PetSmart announced the recall of seven Grreat Choice-brand dog biscuits sold between Aug. 21 and Jan. 19. The biscuits contain peanut paste from a Georgia plant that the Food and Drug Administration identified as the source of the contamination. The risk of animals contracting salmonella is minimal, the FDA said, and there is no risk to humans handling the products.
If an animal has consumed peanut butter treats and has diarrhea or is vomiting, owners should take the animal to a veterinarian. Check the FDA Web site for a complete list of recalled items.
Trader Joe's has also recalled some of their products containing peanut butter, but its brand of dog biscuits is not on the FDA list. Please update this list if you notice more animal-related products are included.
