These detailed story drawings, created with pen and pencil, heart and mind, are a vision quest expanded by paying attention to small moments.Dr. Peter Stacey, a professional ornithologist and riparian management specialist in the Biology Department at the University of New Mexico, graciously wrote this assessment after recently visiting my studio:"The drawings of Beth Surdut capture the…See More

Is that an egg in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

There's a new raven lurking in the lavender. How do I know? He's bigger and more cautious than my regulars, who swoop in to check a few times a day to see if I've put out uncooked chicken eggs. The newbie, watching to see if the egg is really available, is stalking amidst the sweet-scented purple flowers, flying up to land on the creviced rock fountain, then back to the bushes. Now he's on the rock, head swinging back and forth to see if he's alone. Ah ha! He's picked up the prize in his beak and…See More

Raven stories

The stories we tell, either visually or verbally, really do make a difference. I come on this site, Ben's great gift to the community, and am so touched by the stories I see. When I began the Listening To Raven series of drawings, I had no idea that people would bring me such personal stories. The ravens are currenly on exhibit at the Charles Collins Gallery on the plaza in Taos. I was contacted by a woman…See More

LISTENING TO RAVEN FOCUS GROUP

For the past year in New Mexico, I 've been making intricate raven drawings and writing stories to accompany them . My new series, Listening To Raven, has inspired people who never before looked at birds with much curiosity to now bring me stories the way a cat sets a mouse at its owner's feet. Their recognition of life heretofore unexamined develops a personal… Continue
