I would like to "put it out there" that the rescue organizations in the Northern NM area are getting SLAMMED! Variety of reasons why - for sure - but what "we" need right now are more foster homes for dogs (and cats). If you are already a foster for rescue, maybe you would consider being part of a resource list? If you have thought about fostering, let’s see how we can help make that happen! If you could assist with computer/phone/people/dog time, let me know and I can… Continue

Zach isn’t one to mince words. He’ll tell me if I’ve waited too long for a walk or have forgotten his lunch with either a gentle whine or a startling bark.
So when he started moping about the house the other day, I seriously worried about his emotional health. He’d hang his head off the side of the bed, looking forlorn while I tried to get his attention with a squeak toy or a worn sock.
It didn’t take long to realize Zach’s… Continue

You can’t cuddle with them or listen to them purr, but PETA hopes rebranding fish as “sea kittens” will get people to think twice before ordering them up as fillets.
That’s right, sea kittens. Have a good laugh.
First there were Sea Monkeys — a trademark brand name for shrimp brine that magically turns to life once you follow the proper instructions, something I apparently never did as a kid because all I got was cloudy water — and, of course, Chicken of the Sea — a way of… Continue

First I'm not sure what the difference is between the FORUM and BLOG and which is viewed more, but I'm going for the BLOG.
After a year of surgeries and treatments and supplements and a "real food" diet, my 5 year old dog died at the local cancer vet in a lot of pain. I followed the vet's advice and we threw everything at her and in the end all that and $12k later she died of liver failure.
My other dog, age 7, has hip dysplasia and it's feeling like I'm headed to the same… Continue

This was recently sent to me and I find it very disturbing.
This is a horrible situation. This was sent to me by a friend and did not happen to me.
Dog toy story:
On June 22, 2008 , my 10-year old lab mix, Chai, sustained a severe injury from a product that the company Four Paws, Inc., produces. The toy I'm referencing is the pimple ball with bell (Item #20227-001, UPC Code #0 4566320227… Continue

Over the weekend, while walking my dogs in the off-leash dog park, I watched a man flying his kite. It was one of those kinds of kites that flap and make a whirring sound. A large German Shepard (mix?) became "spooked" and started to aggressively bark and charge in the direction of the kite. I immediately called Susan, being my POC for dog-park stuff, and she suggested I call the non-emergency number at the police station. I did, and explained my concern that this was setting up a situation… Continue

I may be the only one who did not know this, and if so I apologize, but my little Jack Russel is in the hospital today due to Xylitol poisoning. If I can spare one person who is not aware (like me) this heartache it will be worth it. Xylitol is a worse poison for dogs than chocolate mainly because it is always poisonous whereas chocolate does not always effect all dogs. Due to its toxicity, I do not understand why there is not a warning on products made with this chemical. My poor dog got into… Continue

I’ve never been one to worry too much about what people say about me — behind my back or to my face. I’ll consider it, but I try not to take it too personally.
But woe to those who criticize my dogs. Sure, I’ll accept some things, but it’s hard for me to resist a comeback. Recently, for example, Bear came a bit too close to someone’s dog at the dog park — she was on a lead, mind you — and the dog’s owner almost stabbed her with a ski pole as Bear started to appear… Continue

Good Sunday morning, animal lovers!
Along with my soul-sister Claudia I feel the need to re-post an older blog. She and I are completely reading off the same sheet of music when it comes to bringing more animals into this over-crowded world.
When you see photos of gorgeous, healthy, fluffy puppies, it pulls at your heartstrings, doesn't it? Therein lies the problem. I absolutely acknowledge that many puppies come into this world through good intentions, but I am also ADAMANT in… Continue

Superstitions have always been a subtle secret of mine. Like I do with most of my personality quirks, I blame my family.
Grandma Swan, a deeply religious woman, believed strongly that you could determine the year’s weather by recording the 12 days after Christmas: Each day’s rain, snow or dry spell represented the coming month’s meteorological forecast.
And then there was that whole Bible thing.
As I grew older and traveled more extensively, I kept adding, not… Continue

1. Just one litter and we’ll have Fluffy spayed.
Studies show that nearly the entire pet overpopulation stems from the "Just one litter" mentality
2. My dog doesn’t run loose, so he/she doesn’t need to be fixed.
Murphy’s law says otherwise
3. We always find a home for the kittens
And that means that an equal number of kittens with be euthanized at your local pound.
4. I want my children to witness the miracle of… Continue

Greetings all! My Ma doesn’t like the snow and ice very much, but wow, I love it! I snuffle in it and frolic whenever I can. Sometimes I just lie in it. More snow, more snow~ !
We had a quiet Christmas. My human sister Annie was unable to fly out of Portland, so I won’t be seeing her for a while. My mom was so sad.
But hey, we didn’t have to spend the holidays in an airport with lots of unhappy travelers. And we had power and light and… Continue

May this be the year that each of us works harder towards a safer, more humane, and more respectful earth for all companion animals and their wild born kin. May each cat, dog, goat, horse, bird and bunny find it's very own human to love and be cherished by. What a world this would be!
Peace in the New Year, for all critters.
