This is a short message will add full details in morning. Maeve's surgery at Ark was long and complicated but successful. She had a tiny necrotic segment of her small intestine removed. She is now in Emergency Hospital on triple antibiotic drip and constant flow pain medicine. The small intestine is full of bacteria. Surgery there has the risk of releasing bacteria into abdomen. Maeve is being watched for abdominal infection and intestinal leakage. Prayer is needed now for her to avoid these… Continue

Maeve is a brave little 8, maybe 10, year old Chihuahua girl, who survived frigid cold and wild animals when she was left on top of Rowe Mesa at Christmastime. Maeve had been run over, kicked, or stepped on at some time in her small life, but healed without veterinary care. Her back legs are underdeveloped yet she can use them. This gives her a wavering gait. She looks like she is out to explore the world in spike heels. It has taken almost a year for Maeve to begin to relax from whatever… Continue

Espanola Valley Humane Society had a senior dog come in yesterday, surrendered by a police officer after he had been in a terrible state of suffering for the past 6 weeks in the officer's yard. We are pursuing felony cruelty charges, but unless we are able to prove that the dog belonged to him, we may have to settle for… Continue

Shaka, a gray African Congo parrot, has an extensive vocabulary. He can mimic Bugs Bunny’s “What’s up, Doc” and the opening lines of the 1950s radio show The Shadow.
But it’s hard to know what the 18-year-old parrot said last week when burglars broke into his La Cienega house and nabbed him,…

Nakida is a 65 lb, 10-month old red-nosed pit who was given up because of a move. Unfortunately she was kept mostly in the yard. She is basically of a sweet nature, responds to training very quickly, wants to please, plays well with other dogs her size or larger. Because of the lack of exposure to the world she will do best with a dog-experienced foster or new owner. She is a little too enthusiastic for little dogs, as she plays so vigorously. She startles at some unfamiliar activities and… Continue

Dr. Thal emphasized the importance of assessing the condition of your horse every time you approach him in order to avoid overlooking minor problems that could develop into major (expensive and dangerous) problems. He pointed out that if you look carefully and pay attention to your horse’s attitude and become familiar with what is normal, you will be able to detect when something is wrong.… Continue

"In 2009, Consumer Reports tested BPA levels in a variety of canned foods and found it in nearly all of the brands tested, suggesting that the chemical leaked in. "What can happen is that BPA in the lining can leach into the food," Walker explains" Huffington Post - Organic
I find this troubling considering how many pets get canned food - and how common cancer seems to be in our pets.

Looking for someone who is willing to do a small-dog nursery foster. Dog is coming into rescue tonight. Will assess for gestation. We know some facilities will abort all the way up to birth, we will not after 4-weeks. If she is big enough that the shelter visually could tell she was pregnant then we are pretty sure she's beyond the 4-week mark. Little terrier mix female, that's all I know right now.
