This morning, one week to the day after we lost our beloved Lucy Girl to lung cancer, we opened our hearts, arms and house to Tula.
The house was so empty without Lucy Girl. We saw her everywhere. It was almost unbearable. So yesterday, Friday, I went to the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and wandered around in the cat adoption area.
And there was little Tula. 7 years old, a beautiful little Calico lady. Owner… Continue

I guess we are done with the cold snaps per se. No more snow either. It finally occurred to me that the furkids have finally decided with their little ways to tell us spring is here. So I thought perhaps I'd start a bit of a discussion of humorous ways we can find to tell about our furkids and the wonderful little changes that occur in spring.
First, Like getting ready for bed upstairs at night and one minute you have an empty sink, you get your washcloth, turn around and find your… Continue

Ok guys, I've got a special case here for you. Calico comes into shelter, easy to handle, friendly etc. She has kittens overnight and suddenly she's Miss Grumpy Pants and won't let anyone near her or the babies. VERY normal cat behavior, but difficult for our staff and for your average cat lover. I need a foster parent who is experienced enough to know how to read Mom cat's behavior signals and to care for her and her babies without letting her get the best of them. Today we discovered that… Continue

I sent out four litters of kittens today for foster! Busy, busy day. More are still waiting to go and I'm so happy to have a place for all of them. Since taking over the foster program, it has been such a pleasure getting to know our foster families. I am just so impressed with how willing and kind hearted they are...makes my job so much easier to have such awesome people to work with! Somehow, I feel it takes pressure off of myself and my coworkers to know that someone else is stepping in and… Continue

I have to humbly admit that Claudia's post has me blogging here. It is never ever easy to let our cherished furkids go before what we feel is their "time". We know when we accept them to share our lives with us, that they are really only with us a short time, and yet they leave an indelible mark on our lives and hearts. And while we all do our best in caring for them, loving them, sharing our souls and lives with them, the hardest part is also the most compassionate part… Continue

I hate to see all the bottled water exposed to the sun - likely resulting in all kinds of petro-chemicals floating in our canine companions organisms! I propose we collect a few bucks from each and build a wooden enclosure, a box that could serve as a seat as well with a frame above that could hold an enclosed bulletin board, big and solid enough to not simply get hauled away.
This idea has been around for a while and in my opinion is way overdue. Unless we can get someone to fix the… Continue

A snapshot taken yesterday morning, 4.21.09 with my camera aimed over the fence above my head.
Down the block there is a remnant of an agricultural life style, a bit of land on a major downtown intersection that holds some geese, a German Shepard dog and this Ram or Sheep. This place has been there for more then the 20 years I live in this… Continue

Like any family man, Cory Snyder was preoccupied that day with kids, pets and errands.
But when the off-duty Albuquerque police officer spotted what he thought was a coyote on N.M. 14, it was obvious to him that whatever was left on his list would have to wait.
Snyder wasn't the only driver March 17 who stopped to help the clearly distressed animal. Another driver pulled over south of Madrid around milepost 23 to take a look at the critter.
What they saw still… Continue

Saturday turned out to be the dreaded day for us.
We made the decision to let our little Lucy Girl go in peace, before she suffered too much.
We chose to let her go at home, in her room. We had found a wonderful and compassionate vet, Dr. Mary Anne Schadler, who came to our house Saturday morning. My husband Stephen and I spent a peaceful last hour with Lucy. Dr. Schadler took great care to give Lucy a final exam and then supported us in our decision to let her go. It was… Continue

I found Max two days after Chrismas, dumped in a ditch, in the middle of nowhere. I had gone to feed the horses and took a short cut down the back roads out side of town to avoid trafic. It was cold and windy, as I passed something along side the road, I happened to look in my rear view mirror I could tell it was a small puppy in the ditch, so I stopped and went back to get him. Poor little thing was cold and scared. When I picked him up he just clung around my neck. He was dirty and had… Continue

What a wonderful idea! I received an email today from a good friend about simply picking and voting for your favorite shelter organization to perhaps win $100k for the organization. And with a partnership to Petfinders to another click and help link. I figured I would post it here in hopes we can help our local organizations! :)

After posting an extensive blog which nobody saw, I'd like to move this (so far one-sided) conversation to the main page. Currently in the dog training world, there are two schools of thought: those that use dominance theory techniques and those that use positive reinforcement. It's possible
that the best case scenario lies somewhere in between, but I strongly believe that some of the techniques used in the dominance based theory are not only emotionally harmful to our dogs but also… Continue

When cancer grew too much for my beloved black Labrador, Krista, I did what I had to do. We spent some time at her favorite places that morning and sat for a while near a riverbank where she once loved to chase Frisbee.
At the veterinarian’s office, Krista’s last moments were spent in my lap, as the intravenous drugs did their quiet work and she quickly passed from this realm to the next. It was difficult and heart-wrenching and I felt as if I all the joy in my life vanished at that… Continue

This is Willa, one of our favorite dog park friends, a Labradoodle whose 1 year anniversary it is today. She is staying with us for the holiday weekend and being the live wire we know her to be, I wanted to take her out a few days early so she has been spending extended time with us since Wednesday. Willa reminds me so of my Isabella-girl with her high… Continue

I had the great pleasure today to watch Ben dance with Zach. It was a blast. Unfortunately, the batteries were low in my camera, the pictures came out awful, but I am posting some fabulous little video clips as well. If they do NOT show up here on SCOOP, then there is CENSORSHIP going on..... :)
Ben, you're the BEST! Zach is a sweetheart!…

Please call if you've seen our cat!!! She is completely white, has blue eyes, her front paws are declawed, and she is wearing a pink leopard collar that has a bow. She is an indoor cat and was given to me as a birthday present a few years ago. She is 3 years old. She must've gotten out when a door was open. We haven't seen her since yesterday, (Thursday, 4/9/09) afternoon/4PM - when the winds were picking up. Her name is 'Sweetie,' and she is a scaredy cat, so if you happen to find her, she… Continue
