Kind Words to Sharkey from Martha Stewart and Mark Ganem - by Susan R. Stoltz

Sharkey recently placed for the third time in one of Martha Stewart's photo contests. I received a lovely email from Mark Ganem, the Pets Editor for Martha’s website, letting me know she’d placed and that it was one of their favorite photos. I replied with a short ‘thank you’ note and explained how lovely it was in light of all that has happened to Sharkey.

After a few emails back and forth about how Sharkey was feeling, Mark and Martha… Continue

Dog Running Down Airport

Dog seen running down Airport Road, this morning, going past Passeo del Sol towards Country Club Road. 20ish pound, male terrier, black w/tan&wt on face/chest/legs. Looked neutered. Hair around neck look like he had a collar on recently. No collar this morning, looked scruffy, was dumpster-diving discarded styrofoam food containers on the road. Disappeared between PdelS & CCrd off to the "right" as you go towards 599. Animal Control called. Keep eyes open for him and/or adds looking for… Continue

Alamogordo Chimps face return to life as lab specimens after 10 years of retirement

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), our public servants, have recently decided to send our NM chimps housed at the Alamogordo Primate Facility to a facility in San Antonio, Texas where they will again be used for invasive research after a decade of retirement. The surprising news today is that 15 chimps have already been moved. The group Animal Protection of New Mexico was trying to get these chimps into sanctuary before next spring when the contract will expire for the care and management… Continue

Scoopers- Please help us spread the word on the Santa Fe Kitten Festival!

A HUGE thanks to Ben for reporting this giant adoption event in Sunday's Scoop, but we still need your help spreading the word...

As many of you know, this weekend is our Third Annual Kitten Festival. While this event may sound like a lot of fun (and it is!), the bigger picture is a tough one. We need this event to be record-breaking, because one hundred little lives are depending on us to make it a success. At the shelter, we only… Continue

How sad, I just learned from Joan, that her Lucky died of Liver faillure, quick and painless, June 29th, I had no idea! He was such a handsome fellow and surely will be missed.

I also had overheard that another dog called Lucky who mostly visited the dog park in the mornings lost his human custodian recently. He died in surgery is the saying and there ought to be a memorial, but I have not heard more, have you? Shocking as I was sitting with the man up on the hill overlooking the dog… Continue

Responsible animal caretakers NEVER leave pets in cars

This time of year with record highs, stories abound about dogs (and kids) being left in cars and it's always for only "15 minutes".....and still responsible. loving owners continue to leave their pets in cars. They always have an excuse. On a 73°F day, the inside of a parked car can reach around 100ºF in 10 minutes and 120ºF in 30 minutes, and that dogs can succumb to heatstroke in just 15 minutes—numerous dogs have died or suffered close calls after being left in parked cars.

Leaving a… Continue

1 year Anniversary for Tia Maria

Home at Last

One year ago Bonnie brought Tia Maria home from the shelter to her own greatest surprise. She had always favored bigger dogs, had several, but was willing to give this little Rat Terrier a try. Turns out they could not be happier, Tia Maria is a very good dog, they formed a strong bond, obvious to anyone watching them. Sadly last… Continue

I wanted to thank each and every one of you again for all of the help, support, and prayers for his safe return. It continues to amaze me how the community reached out… Continue
