The first of many donations, will arrive today at the Las Vegas Animal Shelter. AWC hired a truck to pick up 4,000 lbs.of pet food that was donated by Nestle Purina, located in Flagstaff, Az, that will be split between Las Vegas and Springer Animal Shelters. Thank you to all that answered the plea from the LV animal shelter.

“Rico’s Fund for Little Brown Dogs” was created to honor Rico, the beloved little brown dog of Santa Feans Claudia and Stephen Inoue. Rico had a life of adventure which started in Puerto Rico and ended in Santa Fe. Claudia lost her heart to a young Chihuahua mix during her honeymoon 7 years ago. They moved heaven and earth to have him come to Santa Fe, where he was a cherished member of the Inoue family. Here he lived the life of a tiny…

I’ve been told that letting it out will help.
The pain we feel after the unexpected loss of our beloved Rico Saturday morning is beyond any words.
From the day we found him in the streets of Puerto Rico on our honeymoon in December of 2002 until the minute he died, he was our heart, our angel, our little boy. I can truly speak for myself as well as my husband Stephen. We are devastated.
Rico fell ill Thursday with possible… Continue

Millions of people now consider animal companions to be a part of their family. Animals provide joy, friendship, and unconditional love that brightens our lives and adds a dimension of fulfillment unique to these special relationships.
Given this deep connection, it is only natural that we grieve when our animal companion dies. Yet those of us suffering such a deep loss are often… Continue

Right now the shelter is at critical capacity. But we have 3 large adoption fairs coming up, all of which have the chance to help us save lives. Can you open your heart and home to a dog or a few puppies for the next 2 weeks? We provide all medical care (spay/neuter, deworm, vaccinations), you just need to provide food, shelter and TLC. We will take them back on September 12 to bring to a series of adoption fairs where they have an excellent… Continue

Love dogs? Don't mind getting a little bit wet? Then come over to our grooming party this Sunday at the shelter! We have some wonderful dogs and puppies who could really use a good brush and a bath. You dont need to be a professional, just be comfortable around dogs and be ready to get a bit messy.
One such dog is Star (pictured above), a beautiful siberian husky who needs about 2 years of undercoat brushed off of her. She doesnt even… Continue

They must have liked us because they let us come back!!!
Dew Paws Rescue and friends will, once again, be at the Agora Market in El Dorado, Saturday, Aug., 28th, all day!
Dogs and cats, kittens and pups, we will have some new faces and some you have already seen! Remember, DPR is a 501c3 not for profit charitable organization that depends on donations and adoption fees to get the dollars we need to help save the next abandoned pet!
If you can't adopt, maybe you… Continue

My father, Ned Martin, was the voice of the Boston Red Sox for 32 years. I heard him all my summers growing up, on radios everywhere, in stores while I bought a soda, at friends homes, in windowsills on sultry august evenings, on kitchen tables while dinner was being served, on porches while neighbors sipped cocktails. But it was not until I was older that I really heard my father, heard the poetry in his voice, the spaces between his words, the quiet poignant delivery of a single word.… Continue

This is addressed to all breeders of dogs, cats, horses, goats, guinea pigs, birds, etc etc etc. You KNOW we live in a throw-away society, right? Then WHY do you continue to bring new lives into this world when there aren't enough homes for the creatures ALREADY HERE???? I DO NOT understand the rationale. Cannot begin to comprehend it. Backyard breeders, AKC breeders, puppy mill breeders, people that let their unneutered pets run at large...... you are all on the same page in my book. I don't… Continue

Okay I need some cross species help.
I have taken on the 10 year old "Moose" dog: herbs, pain meds, long walks and lots of love and yet... 1 out of the three cats has got his attention. Two of the cats are tentative but pretty much ignore him. However the smallest and feistiest of the cats is spooked yet gets in his face.
There has to be away for them to get along, right? Prozac for all of us? Suggestions PLEASE.

Well our cute boy is doing well after his surgery yesterday. He's had his chin wired and the wires should come out in a month and a pin was put in his elbow because it kept popping out - the pin needs to stay in for 10 days. He's in pretty good spirits, tail wagging, good appetite and still a great patient. The Dr. says he's ready to go home.
Only problem is he doesn't have one. This is heartbreaking. I think this guy needs a home with a nice sized fenced yard or some space out of… Continue

It was a soft Sunday morning with autumn on tip toe. The dogs and I were walking to our spot by the river to frolick awhile. Faintly, then increasing in volume, I heard a mournful wailing. We followed the cries and discovered a very elderly dog with eyes that could melt a stone. She was caught in a tight clutch of bushes by the water and was unable to move.
I held her head gently and assured her that I was here to help.Removing my overshirt and making a sling I pulled her out
and laid… Continue

Does anyone know if there is any kind of special program, in our area, or anywhere in the state, that focuses on senior cats. I've pulled two senior cats this summer (with help) 17 and 18 years old, and there is another one currently in the Espanola Shelter (just emailed Nina).
Now, the stories on the other two were: Owner died, no one in the family wanted to take care of the elder cat.....
I am bighting my tongue here - you-all know that...right?
So, here is… Continue

Alexander - 1 1/2 years old - slipped out of our courtyard on Friday, 8/21/09 about 10 pm. We did not discover the Alex was missing until early Saturday morning. Alex's sister Brandy is heartbroken, as are Alex's parents. He is an indoor only cat, very friendly when not scare, and is not wise to the coyotes and vultures here in Santa Fe. If you see him, PLEASE contact us immediately. Many thanks.

I was asked to join my friends Scott, Bruce, and Kirk for a round of golf this morning, but I really wasn't ready to leave Gracie by herself. Her recent saga didn't really help her "separation anxiety" which she has had since she was a pup.
Well, who would have known that Black Mesa Golf Course was dog friendly, at least this morning. Not many people were there, we were first to tee off, and they allowed Gracie to come right along with us.
She would sometimes run next to the golf cart… Continue
