I came across this horse today. She's on BLM land near La Cienega on the Santa Fe River. There are wild horses out there, but she was so friendly and by herself I don't think she's wild. She came running up to me like she was happy to see a human. I gave her an apple and she wanted to follow me. Anyone know of a missing horse? She has plenty of water and food out there, but she seems lonely. How do you report a found… Continue

Found three recent? strays (La Cienega)
Three strays have shown up. They look to be recently strayed. One dog is large, black and tan with a wide head, and very friendly. The second dog looks to be a husky mix, white and tan, medium sized. The third dog is a spaniel mix, black and white, smaller.
I'm assuming the owners of these dogs are missing their dogs.

I have been thinking about the way that pets are used to help those having surgery. When my son had a procedure last year, they used a dog to help calm him down so they could start the IV. I think it is great how animals are used in this way. To see a child who is scared to death because he is having Heart surgery
crack a smile is worth its weight in gold.
Use more animals in this way!

R. Thomas Berner recently wrote about his family's beloved golden retriever, Lucy, and said I could share it with fellow Scoopers. Here it is:
A couple of years ago we replaced our noisy garage door with one that was so silent, Paulette and I never knew when one another had come home. On the other hand, Lucy would usually jump up from wherever she was and mosey down the hall to the laundry room and await the person or persons who had just driven into the garage.
We knew,… Continue

We are considering taking our cockapoo to Europe. She has a number of health problems and we were wondering what sort of medical care would be available there. We also received a Travel insurance quote
in case something happened in transit. Do you know what a fair price might be for a two week trip?

need advice as to what I can do to prevent the local SPCA from euthenizing animals in 48 hours from the time they arrive from the local dog catcher etc. I have a friend who was out of town when there dog got out of the yard of the person caring for the dog. They immediately contacted the authorities about the dogs disappearance, in hopes of finding him. They also called the SPCA and they stated they didn't have a dog of the description given. It turns out they did infact have the dog when they… Continue

Almost 10 months ago I lost a beautiful Savannah cat when he bolted out our door and ran out into the night. I have no doubt that he loved us as owners and I have no doubt that he also loves the wild. Savannahs -- and many cats I have learned -- have amazing natural coping skills even with coyotes, cold and rain as their daily companions.
Recently -- after 10 months -- I have begun to get reports of "my cat". Callers have seen him near Aldea, in the Las Campanas area and one woman… Continue

On the last page of the Opinions section in the New Mexican today there was an advertisement listing the stand outs in online visitor traffic. SCOOP was one of the 3 mentioned with a 70% increase in web traffic (I think in the month of July). THANK YOU BEN! We love this website for sharing pet information and making connections. Thanks to the New Mexican for being pet friendly too.

The stories we tell, either visually or verbally, really do make a difference. I come on this site, Ben's great gift to the community, and am so touched by the stories I see. When I began the Listening To Raven
series of drawings, I had no idea that people would bring me such personal stories. The ravens are currenly on exhibit at the Charles Collins Gallery on the plaza in Taos. I was contacted by a woman… Continue

Parade Magazine comes as an insert in the New Mexican. There was an article today on fatal dog attacks. It accused pit bulls of causing most of human dog attack fatalities. If any of you know Nina from the Espanola Valley Humane Society you have met her dog and Shelter mascot, Lil who is a pit bull and is the most gentle and friendly dog you will ever meet. Nina also has a poster with photos of many different breeds who are often mis-identified as pit bulls. The article states "2 out of 3 dogs… Continue

Life is so strange sometimes....
On Thursday, 9/10/09, around lunch time, I sent off an email to my friend Mary, also known as Mary Martin, the Santa Fe Animal Shelter Director. I asked her what her opinion was of adopting another dog after the so recent loss of such a love as my HeartDog Rico. I told her I was deeply depressed and unsure of how to pull myself out of this. I also told her I had been scanning over the "Adoptable Dogs" on their web site and my mouse kept clicking and… Continue

As an author and a supporter of our troops, I have joined two great sites
two months ago, one is " Books For Soldiers," and the one is " Operation
Desert Swap." Both are great places to find a group who needs books to
read wether it's the Army, Air Force, Marines or Navy. All our guys and gals
would love to receive books , check it out....

I am still reeling from the blow of Rico's totally unexpected death.
I have never been a very spiritual person. If I can't see it, it simply does not exist for me. Or does it?
In the 11 days since Rico left us, hopefully to be in a peaceful, painfree place, I met some amazing people and heard some amazing stories.
My wonderful friend Renee has told me over and over again…Rico is still here, all you need to do is be calm and be open to the signs…For any of you… Continue

This afternoon, one of our fellow Scoopers, who I had never met before but exchanged posts with here, walked into my business to speak to me. I will keep her identity anonymous unless she tells me it is okay to say who it was.
She had seen my blog posts about my beloved Rico and came to bring me a beautiful silver ring. She said she had purchased it for herself but felt it should be mine. It has paw prints on the outside and on the inside it has the engraving of UNCONDITIONAL LOVE.… Continue
