Little Lilly went over the Bridge today....

We used to sing to her the "little-little lilly song..." That was before we understood she was deaf. Lilly, was named "rocket" by the Espanola shelter. Abandoned by her owners at the age of 10-years, this had been the 4th time she was picked up by the control, running with the chain. I often wondered, "Who chains up a 13-pound dach/mix dog?" They didn't want to pay the fine, again.....

We saw her picture and the look in her eye and I… Continue

Shuffling Dogs to make room for More - Part II

Okay - as promised, here are some pictures of the dogs I would like to try and foster-out while we try and manage some of the bigger-rescues towards adoptions! Please consider these dogs for a few to several weeks, possibly through the end of the year.

Presenting: Sophie and Jack, neither one of whom would stand still long enough for you to see just how adorable they are...Jack was just groomed, this weekend, so he has on a little t-shirt, but the face shot is not the best. Better… Continue

Foster Home Desperately Needed

We need a foster home for a wonderful Staffordshire Terrier. 'Slim' has been to 3 dog adoption shows and is exceptionally well behaved. He loves being with girl dogs, and has shown zero aggression towards any dog even in large group situations. He loves to ride. We hate taking him back to a kennel situation where he cannot grow further. He deserves a chance at a real home for his outstanding behavior. He would do best in a home where someone is… Continue

Hider's tummy ache

My 16 year old black cat, Hider, is just now getting over a very angry GI tract.

We noticed that she wasn't eating or using the litter box, starting last Friday. I took her into the vet's office and she got fluids, an antibiotic injection and an appetite stimulant.

That worked for Saturday, but Sunday, she has very bad diarrhea and very green vomit.

She spent Monday and Tuesday in hospital getting treatment for possible pancreatitis. I brought her home… Continue

Off leash blog: Changing hearts and minds – with a little push

Those who work to improve the lives of animals know that it’s an often frustrating effort, marked more by setbacks than anything else.

So it’s great when a group of like-minded animal lovers can come together to simply celebrate and acknowledge that there have been successes along the way, despite what sometimes seems like insurmountable odds.

Last Sunday, Animal Protection of New Mexico celebrated 30 years of working toward the humane treatment of all animals at The Chalk Farm… Continue

Jackson sighted in Pecos on Joya del Padre

Last weekend I received a call from a woman named Tara in Pecos, who said she had seen Jackson for two days on her road. Her description was the best yet - including the color of his collar. She went up to Griegos Market/ Gas Station and checked the picture. He was evidently camping out in a drainage ditch on Joya del Padre, a long road to the right just before Griegos Market (and the 4 wy stop) and had even followed her car one day and followed her landlord home. He must have been… Continue

Shuffling Dogs to make room for More.

Where do I start....

I work with mostly big dogs. 40+ pounds and up. I do get smaller ones, but try not to keep them at my home because the mix is not always "safe". I seem to end up with "needy" dogs and, until they even out, they can be reactive. But even if I have to keep a dog several months, I (so-far) have had great luck with rehabbing and re-homing.

Right now I have two smaller dogs, Sophie and Li'l Jack; a corgi/pug and a schnoodle (respectively). Both are… Continue

Two older cats - mom recently died -- funds available for their care

A friend of mine passed away last month from breast cancer and I am trying to help place her two 12-y.o. cats.

They are both neutered males, DMH, 12 years old - DOB 1997, current on shots, their vet is Joy Alesdatter at Sangre de Cristo Animal Hospital in Santa Fe. The orange tabby is named Goldie, and the black and white is BK (Black Kat). They are 12 year old brothers, but do not have to be placed together. Goldie needs insulin shots twice per day. There are funds… Continue

Lost Black Cat on Acequia Madre 10/20/09

My black cat was at my son's house across from Acequia Madre Elementary School for the day and escaped out the back door of the house. She is in a strange neighborhood and doesn't know her way around and I'm very worried about her and want to find her. On top of all this, she is almost 19 years old. Her name is Cochiti and she is WELL-LOVED and MISSED. She has a pink / pale orange collar on and I think she has her tags on as well but can't remember.… Continue

Transporting 4 dogs from Las Vegas to Colorado

Maureen with Animal Welfare Coalition sent out an email last week needing help transporting 4 dogs from the Las Vegas AS to Longmont. I happened to be driving to Denver last week and took Lady, Abby, George, and Dexter to CO (BTW George is a pit mix - Longmont takes pits!!!). LVAS is still overwhelmed with too many animals and not enough adopters. I met 2 great and dedicated LVAS employees who do all they can for the dogs on a very tight budget.… Continue

Does anyone else find this perhaps alarming?

I caught a news article on KOAT online this morning. Needless to say upon reading it, I was very distressed.

When has it become policy for APD to kill an animal for doing it's job and warning strangers away? It is not noted that the officers were being attacked, is it now their policy to kill any dog for barking at them? Is it right to assume any cross breed is definitely a pit or pit cross? Is it right to… Continue

Chicklett is a terrier/doxi cross, Fem about 5 years old (we think). Rescued from the gas. Spayed, UTD on shots, had a dental and a minor surgery to remove a fatty tissue growth on her back. Diagnosed w/a "floating knee" cap in one rear leg. Just means she won't be your hiking dog! Plays with ball for hours of entertainment, funny, attentive, affectionate and smart! Seems to get along well with most other dogs, probably do best with another little male dog. Not sure about cats. Is in foster… Continue

Foster dogs, Santana and Sadie

Both dogs are still available! If any of you know of anyone looking for pet companions please pass this on. I'm fostering Santana (shepherd) and Sadie (lab) in Santa Fe. Both are females about a year old. Both are very "other dog" friendly and would do great in a home with another dog. Santana was close to being euthanized because the small NM shelter needed space for new dogs coming in. Dew Paws Rescue stepped in and gave her another chance. Sadie is… Continue

Making A Difference - A true story about following your instincts and doing the right thing!

I woke up to the ringing phone; my elderly neighbors needed help. I rushed over groggy, in my jeans and pajama top, just as they were moving a large trunk away from the garage wall. There, between the framing, we were stunned to see a single, squirming mass of newborn kittens, squealing for a meal.

I fostered cats before, and share my home with four cats and three dogs. Everyone knows I would never turn my back on an animal in need. So, I wasn't surprised that they had called… Continue

Found dog in Cerrillos area

A female, black-haired Chihuahua mix showed up at Liz Stefanic's rural home on Sunday. I told her I would post the information on Scoop, in hopes that someone recognizes the dog. Here's her note:

She is a female, black haired chihuahua - graying on the nose and a little bit of white on the throat - otherwise black.

Wearing a new purple collar but no tags. About the size of a 3 - 5 lb bag of apples.

We have kept her so that… Continue

Saying Goodbye......

How do you say goodbye gracefully to a very beloved pet companion of 18+ years? How do you make the hardest decision of all and do it with the utmost love and compassion?

Tuesday evening I had to do just that for my very loved boy, Mushy. He had become ill over the last week, and even with vet visits and such, he stopped eating and drinking. And he told me it was time. He couldn’t have said it any louder either. Knowing the decision I had to make and the fact he was asking me to let… Continue

lost cat

Sadie is 10 years old, lost 10/9/09. She's white with charcoal ears and tail. Lost in vicinity of Gonzales and Barrancas. She's shy, and at this point probably real scared. Any help would be so much appreciated.

Thank you.

Found male Shepherd near Siringo, can't catch

This male shepherd mix has been living in the Siringo-Rail Trail area for weeks or months. He has been reported to Animal Services and they tried to trap him back when he was on high school property with no luck. Two friends, Sue and Tracy have been working on building trust and he'll get maybe 5 feet from them, but then any move will make him bolt. He's very smart. I saw him yesterday and he seemed to want to play with my foster dog Santana but was… Continue
