This sweet little black maybe 2 year old dog was rescued last Saturday from along side the road with a broken hind leg. He can walk some and they were on their way to the vet when we met them at the dog park. He is maybe 15 lbs and sweet, calm like a little Sadhu, he gets along fine with the other two dogs.…

Gracie and I are home after a 6 week journey. Gracie played in the Arkansas River, visited new friends in Savannah, Georgia, where she learned about squirrels. Also, in Savannah, she learned a lot about being on a leash downtown, where they have parks with squirrels and horse drawn carriages. She also learned about behaving in hotels, dog friendly restaurants, and movie theatres. She saw the river walk and the Savannah River.
And, she became the new mascot for the Savannah Film Festival… Continue

He is a very sweet, very loving black male dog who weighs about 75 pounds and is youngish ... perhaps a labrador, rottie, pit mix??? ... found Saturday night at 10pm at the intersection of St. Francis and Paseo de Peralta. He is very smart and already learned how to use the dog door. He is very friendly with humans (young and old) and with dogs, too. We are hoping to reunite him with his owner ...

I found this Thanksgiving morning in an open space where I take my dogs for a walk that has a lot of coyote activity. Notice it's faded and rusted. It'd been out there at least a year. There is a pet's name and phone number on the tag.

This is a PETA campaign poster and I LOVE IT!
PLEASE print these out and hand them out or hang them up all over town where ever you can think of!!!!
There is a Spanish version, but sadly it does not include the word COJONES which I find MOST effective.
I am attaching both Adobe and jpg files for downloading, printing out and distributing :)
And thank you to Jenny Woods from PETA… Continue

Kaylee is looking for her forever home! She's been with me for 3 months, has learned a few things here & there, like how to play with toys, play with other dogs with toys & sit for treats. Now it's time for her to move on to her forever home where she'll be a much loved companion! She's a lovely hiking companion & will stay close to you when out. She's a great family dog, too, though a bit rambunctious; she spent the afternoon recently snuggling with my 10 y.o. on the couch while he… Continue

Thank you Julie for your comments and the story. I agree with you of course, there’s still a lot of work to do here. But you bring up an interesting point—animal welfare shouldn’t be about here and there, them and us. There are wonderful organizations in many poor countries, started and operated by local people who actually do care about animals and who know what needs to be done in their countries to change attitudes and behaviors and make life… Continue

Great article Ben. What wonderful work this couple does! True there's still a lot of work to be done here, but my hope is as we make progress in the US we can start sending more and more support to other countries. I've worked in Africa, mostly the Congo Basin and the circumstances of the dogs in the urban areas broke my heart (in the forest with the tribes they were a bit better off). I'd bring flea/tick drops with me and feed any dog that I could… Continue

The new owners of La Tienda @ Eldorado are providing Felines & Friends with space for a temporary adoption center in the hope we can place a couple of dozen cats for the holidays. However, we need volunteers from the Eldorado area who are willing to sign up for a scheduled time to care of the kitties as well as staff weekend adoption hours. If you are interested in volunteering, please send an e-mail to email@example.com or leave a message at 316-2281.

Bella Rose is a med/lg size pit bull, fem, brindle and white. We think she is 2ish years old. She is spayed and UTD on all shots. Bella is an active dog who gets along well with other dogs her size or larger. She is sweet and compliant in training, walks well on a leash. Loving and affectionate with people of all sizes. Would do best in a home with active, attentive, dog-savvy people who are willing to include this dog in the everyday life of the home and travel.

Do you need a small, meaningful gift? I fold and bead the beautiful Japanese Peace Cranes in photo above.
The cranes are $5.00 each with 100% of the money going straight to Rico's Fund, a Santa Fe Animal Shelter Spay and Neuter Project, named for our beloved boy Rico who left us so unexpectedly this past August. Each crane comes complete with small gift bag and the printed out history of the Japanese Peace Crane and there are no 2… Continue

There’s a crisis at the Española Valley Humane Society. It’s called too many kitties.
If this sounds like a common refrain, stop me. Or better yet, make a vow to help stop pet overpopulation.
The shelter is desperate to find homes for at least 50 felines who risk euthanasia simply because there’s no room at the inn. Nina Chiotasso, who handles the shelter’s community relations, says her Thanksgiving wish is to give these furry wonders a second chance.
The late… Continue

Re: the ear...Slim was taken away from his previous owner by the District Atty up here in Raton. She is super tough on animal neglect and abuse. The owner clipped his ear with the intent of making him mean and fighting him. As Steve can tell you, it didn't make him mean...he was rescued in time. It was more a case of pure neglect than abuse other than the ear. We have a photo of him when he came in...the difference between then and now is dramatic. He tries so hard to please. We have had him a… Continue

A month ago, Felines & Friends was in a bit of a panic with funds dwindling. However, in addition to the mail out to our supporters the article by Ben in "Scoop" resulted in quite a few new pet lovers sending checks to help us. We hope to reach our target of $15,000 by the end of the year which would take us into 2010 and the new cycle of grant applications.
