Marshall Chapter 5. - Our Trip Home
All day Wednesday I drove in the hot desert air, my only stops along the way were at gas stations and rest stops to let the dogs out. Poor little Marshall was too terrified at these places even to pee. I did my best to find a quiet parking place without activity. Still, as the blades of grass blew in the wind he nearly had a meltdown from fear.
Every time my two dogs barked at something outside the car I thought this poor little Jack… Continue

reply to firstname.lastname@example.org if interested.
It all began when a good friend forwarded me the message. I have responded to many ads like this, the usual response is nothing - no thought of overpopulation. This time I replied asking questions and offering spay/neuter help. When I… Continue

Posting again for my friend Carolyn:
Hi Friends and Family,
I am happy to tell you that I am keeping Wayfarer with me.
He likes it here and I feel lucky to have found him. As vigorous as he is on our walks, he is a peaceful presence in our home. He is very responsive to me now, wagging his tail when I speak to him and allowing me to give him back rubs and head and ear massages. It is very easy having him here, we communicate well, but then of course, he's… Continue

Thanks to the efforts of the folks-on-the ground in Clovis, the Animal Control agreed to let all the dogs (standing) as of Friday afternoon, stay in the kennels through Wed. morning before Thanksgiving. As no new dogs will be accepted next week they will not become over crowded. Any dog or cat that is not adopted out by Tuesday, close-of-business, will be put on the "truck" (van, car, whatever) to come into rescue on Wed. morning. Every single one.
Thank you to all the rescue… Continue

There has been a lot of activity at The Horse Shelter as a direct result of the article in the November 4 Santa Fe New Mexican (thanks Ben!) Several adoptions are pending.
Do you recognize this face?
I took this photo of Pippi Longstocking on Wednesday November 17, 2010. Here is a photo of what she looked like when she came to The Horse Shelter as an orphan filly.
She getting to be a big girl!… Continue

As I drove home from Arizona with Marshall in a crate and my two flaked out on the seats of the car, I began to wonder if I’d done the right thing.
Would I be what this little guy needs? Would I have the patience for all the major steps that were essential for him to take?… Continue

Interesting article even if, as one commenter stated .... "Most dog owners worth their salt figure out these "expert" conclusions without needing the "science" described"
I'd watch the AC360 episode they mention if I had cable

Okay folks, it's the week before Thanksgiving.
Well - I guess that worked! They will not "clean house" till Wed. But still the same for any left by Wed all will go.
Sorry if I'm about to offend anyone and/or everyone, but on Friday morning the Clovis Animal Control will euthanize ALL the dogs and cats in the cages and close down for the week of Thanksgiving.
There are some breed dogs in there, a lot of pitts, a bunch of pups and small dogs.
Go onto Petfinder.com… Continue

Just had to share this story... we need to spread all the good news we find about this breed... since the media tends to highlight only the negative.... I wouldn't trade my big guy (rescued form the highway in Pojoaque 2 years ago) for anything in the world... like Way... he failed his temperament test and was put on death row when I was able to set him free... one of the best and smartest dogs I've ever had... such a great, happy temperament... he was just scared in the shelter environment...… Continue

2 car keys, one to a Subaru and one to a Ford hang on the lost and found pole in the main area next to the little table.
Our Ortiz dog park entry would benefit from a speed limit sign. Yesterday I watched again a pick up truck race in and out of the driveway. While I never race, I do find myself even go at speeds too high as regards safety of our canine puppies especially. I wonder how to go about getting a reminder for appropriate speed limit?
2 new chairs up on the ridge… Continue

Marshall's Story 3 - A Struggle At The Threshold
As I watched Marshall hesitate at the threshold of the barn door Sandy gave me a bit of history.
“He seems to have issues with going across the threshold from one place to another. When he first arrived he took a flying leap and landed about five feet beyond the door. It's the same when he tries to come inside.”
He struggled, cowered, looked beyond the open doorway longing to be outside in the warm sunshine and… Continue

Felines & Friends has a darling kitten who tested FELV+ while being sterlized. However, it is otherwise healthy and we would retest in a couple of months. In the meantime, this kitty needs a place to live with no other cats. Dogs would okay. Please e-mail email@example.com.

Felines & Friends is in need of foster homes. WIth the holidays upon us, we still have nearly 130 cats and kittens in our care. Some of our regular foster homes are travelling in December so their foster cats need somewhere else to live. In addition, Santa Fe Cats Luxury Boarding and Z Pet Hotel who donate space for cats throughout the year are quickly booking up with regular clients and need us to house our cats elsewhere. Please send an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org if you are… Continue

“When he came to us he could hardly stand upright. He had lived his life in a cage with a wire bottom. In order to keep his feet from going through the bottom he had to splay his legs outward. His feet were web-like and he walked with his toes extended as far as possible as if he was still walking on wire. He has finally figured out how to keep his legs underneath him.”
As I watched this ten-year old Jack Russell hobble about in the grass enclosure he still looked as if it was… Continue
