Off-leash blog: A New Year's wish: Canine good spirit to all

We don’t need Charles Dickens to know these are the worst of times. Layoffs, buyouts, financial meltdowns and endless wars — our collective karma has come back to bite us in a big way.

So when the snow started falling last week and I woke up to see not a few inches on the driveway but at least 8, I have to admit I saw no magic in a white Christmas. As the dogs and I began our morning walk, breaking through virgin snow, all I could think of… Continue

Off-leash blog: The hidden gifts of love

While I was rushing Zach to one of his many social functions recently, a woman pulled up in her car as I was getting ready to leave mine. She watched as I fussed with Zach’s leash, calming him down while at the same time reassuring Bear we wouldn’t be long.

The woman wondered why that black-and-white dog wasn’t accompanying us inside, and I simply said she wasn’t ready for a party.

“She’s foster dog,” I told her. “She’s come a… Continue

Morgan's blog: Having a safe holiday

Greetings all you readers! I get to go for long fast walkies with Alice in her power chair. Last Sunday she ran over some stickers in the path and got a flat tire. It’s fixed now, so we can go fast and farther again. Yippee!

Here are some safety tips for the holidays. Although a lot of older dogs and cats know these things already, for you younger pupsters and kitties read on:

Don’t eat that box of chocolates under the tree, or the cookies left for Santa. Don’t counter… Continue

Off leash: Capturing the magic of the moment

It's hard to know what pets really want for Christmas, but given a chance, David Schultz probably knows their wishes.

Schultz is the impeccable Santa Claus who's been patiently awaiting good dogs, cats and other critters at PetSmart on Zafarano Drive. With just the right twinkle in his deep-blue eyes, this Santa sports an authentic white beard along with a generous belly laugh.

And his kindness to animals knows no bounds.

Last weekend, I… Continue

Class of interest?

Ok, not knowing where else to put this idea out to everyone, I figured I might start here. Currently I work at the Community College here in Santa Fe. We have started a new course that I took last spring and will be offered this spring. While it is titled "Introduction to Complementary and Alternative Medicine" I took the class because it would expand my thinking and talents to helping heal animals more. The basics are the same for humans as for animals, so I plunged into this class and haven't… Continue

Off-leash blog: Embracing change for every being

My brother in Alaska is usually hospitable. He might grumble a bit, but he’ll open up his house to strangers if someone’s in need.

If you mention People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, however, he’ll likely ask you to close the door on your way out. And that’s probably why, years ago, I joined PETA, mainly so I could get those cool stickers with clever slogans like “Meat is murder” and “Love animals, don’t eat them.”

I’d gleefully apply those stickers to every… Continue

Giving for a cause this Holiday

Greetings everyone:

The Holidays are upon us in full force. In the past few years I have noticed a move towards less consumerism and more compassionate giving. It seems silly and wasteful to spend money on your friends and family in order to give them more “stuff” that they don’t need. More and more of us are deciding to support a worthy cause instead. In that spirit, I would like to suggest giving this season to “Isaac’s Fund” in memory of my much missed goat Isaac, whom many of you… Continue

Morgan's blog: Surviving the holidays

It’s the holiday season once again. Don’t get stressed out like so many humans at this time of year. My person, Alice is sort of a scrooge--she doesn’t like Christmas: true! She likes Thanksgiving: what’s not to like unless you are a turkey: food, friends, family, more food … She slipped me a little bit of turkey and last night I got to eat the salmon skin: Yum!

Alice will not succumb to the commercial side of Christmas: “getting and spending, we lay waste our powers.” TS… Continue
