News story: Shocker: Lamppost short-circuits pets

By Tom Sharpe/The New Mexican

Dogs walking by the lamppost at the northwest corner of Cathedral Place and East San Francisco Street are getting shocked.

Santa Fe city firefighters taped off the corner early Thursday afternoon after a San Francisco couple discovered the problem.

Allison Taylor and Justin Jennings, both 27, said they had stopped off in Santa Fe on their way back to California from Jennings’ family home in Burlington, Vt.

As they walked… Continue

What a difference a day makes!

Just wanted to share a heartwarming adoption give you one of those "aaaahhhhh" moments on the eve of our New Year 2010! Sparky was pulled from the Las Vegas shelter hours before his death. He had already been approved for euthanasia and was one of five dogs on the "hit list" for that day. He spent three months here at Canine Canyon Ranch, he even went down to the big adoption event in ABQ on Dec… Continue

News story: Deputies seek answers in dog's death

Warning: Photo at end of blog may be offensive to some.

Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the death of a dog whose body was found last week by a walker in a Cuyamungué arroyo. The animal had a makeshift noose around its neck.

The exact cause of the death of the dog — an adult female pit bull, white with light gray spots — is not known. But suspicious wounds, coupled with how the dog was found, lead investigators to believe the dog was cruelly abused, said Maj. Ron… Continue

Foster Dog Naming Contest!

I got a new foster dog from the Santa Fe Animal Shelter today and she doesn't have a name yet. Any ideas? I'll take suggestions through noon on New Year's Day. There's no prize, except the satification of winning and passing on a name to a dog with a bright future! She's 11 months, "lab mix," a skinny 35 lbs. VERY sweet, very submissive, VERY shy. She loves to be with other dogs and play. I think she looks a bit like Claudia's dog, Max, with a cute… Continue

Ideas for our dog park - what do you think?

How about feeding the birds during winter season? I see no reason why not, do you? We could buy a huge bag of seeds from the feed bin for their best price, $25, find a sealable container (I am thinking for example of a Coca Cola barrel they used to give away) and place it somewhere central in the park like near the table and chairs.

Having watched Animal Planet of late, I also think it would be nice to have something like an obstacle course for our dogs to be challenged and… Continue

Dog Park Christmas Tree with Isabella

Merry Christmas!
There are dog treats on that tree and now after Christmas
it would be time to gift your dog with something,
even as small as a tiny cookie from Trader Joe's.

In regard to Calling Animal Control and Zippity Do Dog's post

Dear Julie,

I am sorry if you had trouble at the dog park. Nobody wants to take a dog away from a good and responsible owner. I called Animal Control twice recently on dogs without collars that others claimed to have seen often before.

Do you know that the dog park rules do not allow for bringing more then 3 dogs to the park? Do you know that we are supposed to be there with the dogs and our leads? Do you know that at any sign of aggression a dog has to be taken… Continue

No such thing as bad publicity!

Hi all:

The Las Vegas Optic published an article about Canine Canyon Ranch today. I've already gotten several phone calls thanking me, and got to convince two people to get their dogs fixed (and gave them referrals for getting their latest litters to the right rescues!). I try to never miss an opportunity to educate people about the benefits of spay/neuter.…

Off leash blog: Bright lights stand out in time of darkness

It’s been a tough year for a lot of people, and unfortunately that means a lot of animals have suffered, too.

All area animal-welfare groups have seen critical donations cut back or simply dry up, right at a time when more and more people are abandoning their companion animals at shelters or worse — on the road or in someone’s backyard. The Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society laid off staff and many top administrators took a payroll cut.

The same was true at the… Continue

The latest Christmas Angels at Canine Canyon Ranch

Hi all:

Just when I was down to only three dogs here, (two were adopted at the ABQ big event last weekend and one more since) and planning to spend some time with my own suffering-from-lack-of-attention old labrador, I got a call yesterday from Susan West out here in Las Vegas about a young dog chained at an abandoned house, along with a rottie who appeared to be staying with him and was happy to jump right in my, we now have five here… Continue

Lost Blue Heeler mix

Pup is a six year old male blue heeler mix. I have had a rash of seven sightings within the past two weeks all within the Santa Fe City limits. All were verified with his photos. I have a lot of confidence that this is my dog. Please everyone keep a close eye out for him. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas.

This afternoon, Mary Martin, the executive director of the Santa Fe Animal Shelter threw a surprise party for our beloved Ben Swan, the founder of Scoop.

What some of you may not know is that he does Scoop totally on his own time.

We appreciate his dedication to animal welfare!

We love you, Ben!

Ben got his very own espresso machine to keep him awake so he can write all the great things for Scoop.…

Helping Dogs Live Longer, Healthier Lives

This is one of the articles that inspired us to do what we do. We believe every animal deserves the chance to live a long, happy healthy life.

Please read this article (kinda lengthy) but well worth the read for animal lovers. It opened up our eyes to the world of commercial dog food, even what we thought was a "high quality" dog food, was still not quite what we… Continue

There's still time....

100% of every penny you spend on these beaded cranes goes DIRECTLY to the low cost Spay and Neuter Program at the SFASHS Spay and Neuter clinic.

There is still time to come by and purchase some Peace Cranes. I have been raising an average of about $250 per week over the last few weeks with the sale of these cranes. Last week, one gentleman came in, sent by his wife who was given a crane as a present and loved it, and he purchased 21 of… Continue

Giving Them a Second Chance - Transporting Dogs

Our local shelters and rescues work very hard to find local homes for all the dogs who come to them. The reality is there are not enough people locally who are willing to adopt them. There are some shelters in Colorado that are willing to take some of the dogs in (thanks in large part to the success of the Denver area's spay-neuter program which has resulted in a decline of strays and puppy litters at the shelters' door step).

If you are… Continue

Network for Pet Care People

Six months ago I started a group for good Pet Care People who live in the City of Santa Fe or surrounding areas. We meet once a month to share stories and and experiences with others who have established their own businesses. If you have experience in this field, would love some human contact, have a great sense of humor and would like to join this small, informal group, please reply. Thank you and Happy Holidays to all you hard working Pet Sitters!
