It’s going to get down to 0 in Santa Fe and -10 in Taos in the next couple of days, with wind chills much colder. Dogs should not be left outside in this weather. Below are Santa Fe City and County ordinances (fuzzy, but at least there is something) related to shelter and numbers to call if you see an animal in danger (of freezing to death). Even with shelter those fur coats can’t keep them warm enough in these temperatures. I remember hearing about a person who dropped off a frozen dog at…Continue
Marshall Meets the Chickens
Jack Russell’s and chickens don’t often mix and when they do it’s usually disastrous for the chickens. The exceptions are the Jacks that have encountered ‘barn chickens and
roosters.’ They quickly learn…

My heart breaks for the horses used to produce Premarin (Pregnant Mare Urine-in case you didn't know). They are impregnated and confined in cramped stalls so their urine can be collected for use in a drug called Premarin. In the spring, the mares will give birth to…Continue
Gusto is a possible pitbull or boxer mix but the most loving dog ever. He
was saved from the middle of traffic with a choker collar and heavy metal

may need to be brought up do date on shots. He is a fun loving dog, still
"young" and full of energy. He is tolerant of other dogs, sweet with people.
No cats. The family is divorced, the parents moving to different parts of
the country and…Continue

Very sad news: Only 10 year old Oscar, a (Frank Ortiz) dog park regular, passed away very suddenly last month, November. Cancer was found on his lung, he had a hard time breathing. Condolences to the lady with the Afghan roots that took such great care of him.
This USA Today reporter contacted shelters and rescue groups several months ago looking for stories of rescue animals that ended up being rescuers -- here is the resulting article published this week. Wonderful stories. I would love to hear all 200 of them. We feel so magnanimous when we take in a "stray" and then lo and behold they end up saving us in so many different ways. I have a foster cat with cancer that I didn't have room for, but ended up with anyway 18 months ago. Every time I…Continue

This is Dakota, an 8-year old Pug, adopted by Trish and Jim in Los Alamos, from a Pug-Rescue in TX. Dakota has been with them for 2-months, and they have discovered that he has an elongated soft palate. This condition is not unusual for dogs with 'squished" noses, but the condition in this dog is causing serious…Continue
