Help for freezing dogs

It’s going to get down to 0 in Santa Fe and -10 in Taos in the next couple of days, with wind chills much colder. Dogs should not be left outside in this weather. Below are Santa Fe City and County ordinances (fuzzy, but at least there is something) related to shelter and numbers to call if you see an animal in danger (of freezing to death). Even with shelter those fur coats can’t keep them warm enough in these temperatures. I remember hearing about a person who dropped off a frozen dog at…

Marshall Chapter 10. Marshall Meets the Chickens by Susan R. Stoltz

Marshall Meets the Chickens

Henpecked

Jack Russell’s and chickens don’t often mix and when they do it’s usually disastrous for the chickens.  The exceptions are the Jacks that have encountered ‘barn chickens and

roosters.’  They quickly learn…

Lola Needs a Loving Temporary Foster Home ASAP

Lola is a mama Staffordshire Terrier saved from a back alley in the city of Las Vegas, NM. She had endured 3 years chained and bred and bred and bred. Her 'owner" finally released her, along with 6 pups, four weeks ago. We were lucky enough to find an amazing foster through Iris of Used Pets Ltd. Lola has been deeply loved by this family with two children. Sadly this morning, the 9 year old son had a reoccurrence of life threatening symptoms of the rare auto immune disease he was born with. He… Continue

One Step Forward - Two Steps Back

This week was one of unimaginable courage for Marshall. He actually got up the nerve to ask for kindness.

As I mentioned before he will follow behind me in the…

premarin Horses

My heart breaks for the horses used to produce Premarin (Pregnant Mare Urine-in case you didn't know).  They are impregnated and confined in cramped stalls so their urine can be collected for use in a drug called Premarin. In the spring, the mares will give birth to…

Gusto needs a foster.

Gusto is a possible pitbull or boxer mix but the most loving dog ever. He

was saved from the middle of traffic with a choker collar and heavy metal

chain on him. His family has had him over three years.  He is fixed and

may need to be brought up do date on shots. He is a fun loving dog, still

"young" and full of energy. He is tolerant of other dogs, sweet with people.

No cats. The family is divorced, the parents moving to different parts of

the country and…

Dogs pay it forward - Who rescued whom?

This USA Today reporter contacted shelters and rescue groups several months ago looking for stories of rescue animals that ended up being rescuers -- here is the resulting article published this week. Wonderful stories. I would love to hear all 200 of them. We feel so magnanimous when we take in a "stray" and then lo and behold they end up saving us in so many different ways. I have a foster cat with cancer that I didn't have room for, but ended up with anyway 18 months ago. Every time I…

Please Help Trish Meet Her Goal!

This is Dakota, an 8-year old Pug, adopted by Trish and Jim in Los Alamos, from a Pug-Rescue in TX. Dakota has been with them for 2-months, and they have discovered that he has an elongated soft palate. This condition is not unusual for dogs with 'squished" noses, but the condition in this dog is causing serious…
