Adopt Me! Doberman Mix

Sabina is a 4 year old spayed female Doberman mix currently in a foster home in Santa Fe. She is very playful with other dogs and is great with kids. She is house trained and likes going for car rides and walks. She is NOT an outside dog and instead enjoys spending time with her family and sleeping on…

She is house trained, likes to play with the other dogs in the house, and walks well on a leash. She is very shy but she is building up her confidence in foster care and learning from…

The Rewards of Fostering

Do you remember your first dog? The best memories of my childhood involved the dogs I grew up with. This is a photo of one of my former foster dogs with her new family. I had a good feeling about this family right off the bat. We met at the dog park and Santana and their daughter instantly bonded. It all came together. Last summer Maureen put the desperate call out needing a foster home for a dog in Las Vegas days away from being put down. Many Scoop… Continue

Foster Dog Naming Contest!

I got a new foster dog from the Santa Fe Animal Shelter today and she doesn't have a name yet. Any ideas? I'll take suggestions through noon on New Year's Day. There's no prize, except the satification of winning and passing on a name to a dog with a bright future! She's 11 months, "lab mix," a skinny 35 lbs. VERY sweet, very submissive, VERY shy. She loves to be with other dogs and play. I think she looks a bit like Claudia's dog, Max, with a cute… Continue

Foster dogs, Santana and Sadie

Both dogs are still available! If any of you know of anyone looking for pet companions please pass this on. I'm fostering Santana (shepherd) and Sadie (lab) in Santa Fe. Both are females about a year old. Both are very "other dog" friendly and would do great in a home with another dog. Santana was close to being euthanized because the small NM shelter needed space for new dogs coming in. Dew Paws Rescue stepped in and gave her another chance. Sadie is… Continue

Lucky needs some help

I'm looking for someone who'd be interested in fostering or adopting Lucky. She's from the Espanola Valley Humane Society. An interested person would need to complete a quick foster application before the Shelter would agree to transfer. I recently adopted a dog and found out this week she has heartworms and now needs 6 weeks of no activity which will be more challenging since my dog and Lucky love to play (local shelters test for heartworm but for… Continue

Off-leash blog: In search of love's magic wand

In the ’60s, a simple answer was offered to almost every question: more love.

But when it comes to troubled companion animals, is love enough?

This is a question I’ve been mulling around in the five weeks or so that we’ve been fostering a timid rescue dog. Bear has made significant strides in coming out of her shell-shocked self, but will she ever be a part of the family? Will she ever come when called, respond with trust instead of fear or snuggle when we need an… Continue

Off-leash blog: Canine capers the stuff of dreams

I guess you could say the change started when I reached for my cup of coffee one morning and found Bear’s face. This black dog was likely taking her first sip ever of Kona blend.

But maybe the biggest hint that our foster dog was finally coming out of her shell happened a few nights earlier when we heard a crunching sound from the corner of our bedroom. At first we thought Bear had discovered the rawhide toy we had left for her: the… Continue

Off leash: Coaxing dogs from out of shadows

Somewhere inside Bear is a dog that isn’t afraid of the dark, unexpected noises or chain-link fences. Somewhere in that mass of canine cerebellum is a dog that knows what a biscuit is, that an outstretched hand is not an attack and a stuffed toy is not a weapon.

But for now Bear, once known as Velvet during her days at The Animal Support Center in Las Vegas, N.M., is trapped in the cycle of her neurosis, fearful of everything, mistrustful of everyone.

And for now, she’s in… Continue

Friends in need

Feline & Friends foster parents have fun while filling a vital role

Nancy Palmer loves kittens.

The Eldorado resident gets her kitten fix in an upstairs room of her house where, nestled among toys and exercise equipment, two large playpens temporarily house any number of kittens.

“I call this our kitten room,” Palmer says, gently coaxing six kittens out of their cages for fun and socialization. “These are my babies right… Continue
