A dog out on a hike with its owner in the Sun Mountain area this week contracted plague after chewing on a dead rodent, the state Health Department reported.
The dog, which has since recovered, was the first indication of plague activity in New Mexico this year, according to a news release. Last year, there were six human cases of plague in the state, with three of them in Santa Fe County. In one of the county cases, an 8-year-old boy died.
