DOG FOOD NEEDED FOR HANDICAPPED MAN'S SIX DOGS

Animal Protection of New Nexico, a state wide organization, has a progaram for Santa Fe Area Low Income Pet Owners who need help  paying their vet bills. I am the "facilitator" who helps make that happen. However, I do sometimes get phone calls from pet owners with other problems. This man lives somewhere out near the prison, has a back problem and needs help in paying for dog food for his six dogs.I didn't ask but I assume the dogs were strays that he took in before his back injury. He is willing to do light handi-man work. Our program cannot help him but I did tell him I would try to find some way to do so. If any Scoopers can work out a plan to help him, please let me know. Thanks a lot!   geri aron

TWO ITEMS: #1) I just spoke with Robert King who is the man needing dog food and he was very pleased with the help from Donna and I gave him the Shelter phone # as suggested by Ben, in case he needs more help.

#2) I received a call this morning from a man in Glorieta who wanted to know what to do about a stray dog he had been feeding for the last few days....When he gave me a descrption of the dog, it sounds like a Shar Pei or Shar Pei mix....male (poss. neutered), short brown hair and wrinkled face. I remember a missing Shar Pei sometime last fall or late summer....also one that was running around the dog park off Alemada.I suggested taking it to the shelter and gave him the phone #.   Any one remember a missing Shar Pei?

HI Geri,

I will invite you to be a friend. I have been absent for a long time; was one of the first 50 to join.

I thank you for reaching out to people without judgement. These are horrible times in this country and we all need to be more compassionate and look for the simple goodness.

These times we all are living are difficult, heart-rendering and yet opportunity. No act of kindness is too little. My heart goes out to this man and so many others; all who are struggling - what ever form the harshness of life takes - we all need to be more compassionate.

Thanks for reaching out to this guy, Geri. We have a pet food bank at the Shelter, but it sounds like he wants assistance to buy pet food. Have him call the shelter at 983-4309 ext. 610 to see if he qualifies for the donated food. We also work in conjunction with Kitchen Angels and other groups to make sure people can get food for themselves and their pets. That might be a better avenue for him.

Geri, I would guess they all do, but I'm not sure. The first two you mentioned have a phone number, though, so checking with them directly may have some answers. There was a 'contact info' link on the website, too.

I can cover this tonight.... but l will also print out your info and give it to him tonight....

St. Elizabeth's Church has a homeless program and when Karen Cain worked for them she did this really neat program to help feed homeless people's dogs. I beleive she is working this program, now, as a separate 501 and our gentleman may not be eligible for that support. But it's a good program to know about.  Karen won an award last year for her work....you are so not 89 years old LOL!

Thank you Donna and Shari

Shari, I checked out thefooddepot.org and there are three in Santa Fe...One is at St. John's Methodist Church on Old Pecos Tr., another is Bienvenidos on Fifth Street and the other is Food for Santa Fe on Siler Rd.Do you know which of them give out dog food...or do they all?

Donna, I didn't find a St. Elizabeth's Church...but there is an emergency shelter on Alarid...is that what you meant??....I just spoke with Robert King and he will be at Sam's this evening.....I cannot make it ..been out most of the day and age 89, have only so much energy per day!   Thank you both for helping out,   geri aron
