Update on Jack: His owner's attorney filed a motion saying that Jack had no visible injuries when he was surrendered to the shelter. Although EVHS provided photos showing clearly that this was not the case, the investigating deputy failed to show up at the hearing with our photographs and statements, and the case was dismissed. Jack has been adopted by our vet Gretchen Yost, but we are truly saddened to hear that justice was not served.

If you go to Nina's Rio Grand Sun link you post a comment there too.

I am so disappointed in the Rio Arriba police force and "justice" system in Espanola.  It makes a mockery out of the law.  But I applaud the Espanola Valley Humane Society for saving Jack and working to try seek justice for him.  Perhaps the Attorney General should step in.  I left a message.  Animal Cruelty Hotline:  888-260-2178 http://www.apnm.org/programs/cruelty_hotline.php

Too many cases get dismissed because a deputy or arresting officer fails to attend hearings and such. Maybe someone ought to start fining these folks to make it crystal clear they'd better follow through with their responsibilities to their community.
