My 13 year old Black Lab,Tzuli was just diagnosed with liver cancer (carcinoma). Last week she was so sick and at the vet for the most part of the week. She couldn't walk and hardly ate, I was sure she'd be gone by the end of the week. But since she has come home she has made a miraculous recovery. She is walking now and nearly has her appetite back and she is wagging her tail much more. She even ran into the lower yard to bark at the guy walking his dog behind the house.
I have been through cancer before with my 5 year old dog who had mast cell cancer. She had chemo, radiation, surgery, had many appointments at the local cancer vet, we tried a "miracle drug" (Gleevec) that cost $2000 for a 30 day supply that made things worse, and she died 9 months later.
Surgery isn't an option. The vet has recommended Metacam (NSAID), Cytoxan (chemo drug), and Chinese herbs.
My hope is to keep her healthy and feeling good for as long as possible. I inherited Tzuli 3 years ago from my Dad after he died unexpectedly, and she has been like a living piece of him that will be hard to let go.
She is currently taking Denamarin (SAM-e, antioxidants for liver support), Clavamox (antibiotic), Metoclopramide (for nausea), and Tramadol (for pain - lessening dose).
She is on a cancer/liver diet - NOT the canned kind, but real food mixed with high quality kibble and Nature's Logic meat patties.
Does anyone have experience with Cytoxan? Did it make your dog feel sick and not eat? I heard dogs tolerate cancer medications better than most humans.
Does anyone have experience with Chinese herbs for treating cancer in dogs (or improving liver health)? The vet couldn't tell me what herbs would be used.
