Found Black/White Corgi Mix I-25 South of Las Vegas NM (could not catch)

UPDATE:  this dog was probably laying on I-25 waiting for and hoping his friend, a dead shepherd mix in the median, would get up.  I did not see the dead dog until I returned a few days later.

Found male black dog with white chest on I-25 milepost 339, 5 miles south of Las Vegas, NM. One mile south of Phillips 66 station at exit 339. I couldn't catch him. He was laying on I-25 at 1:30 pm today (Dec 23) so I pulled over thinking he was injured, but he got up and crossed all lanes of traffic. I drove around to the frontage road and found him again but he wouldn't come to me then scurried into a drainage. The last place I saw him was near La Manga Trail and the frontage road. I left dog food and sardines out for him. He was laying on I-25 near a wrecked car (an Accent) and I thought maybe he belonged to the car's owner. The cashier at Phillips 66 did not know of a lost dog and said the person with the wrecked car did not mention missing a dog (they were there earlier waiting for insurance company). I talked to a guy who lived nearby and he did not recognize the dog. But the dog seems lost and missing someone. Lots of his footprints in the snow and up to I-25 near La Manga Trail. Seems sweet. If anyone drives by the area please keep an eye out. If he "belongs" to someone nearby seems it's not a safe place for him.

Hi Donna.  I had a slip leash and sardines and dog treats.  I could not get close to him.  Animal Welfare Coalition of Northeast NM contacted me about 10 days later saying a man named Clarence was looking for him and gave me his phone number and I called 4 times over a week and never got a response, and asked AWC for more info and never heard back.

Hi Shari,

I did not pick up the dog.  It was large and in the median of the highway.  If it looked like it had a collar I would have ventured out to check that but no collar.  Sadly there were 3 dead Shepherds in that stretch between Pecos and Las Vegas.  I checked one other for a collar (none) and the 3rd was too far gone.  The only thing I could think of to do to stop the number of dogs getting hit was to donate to PAWS (Pecos Animal Welfare Society) and AWC (Animal Welfare Coalition who now runs the shelter in Las Vegas) in hopes of getting more dogs spayed/neutered in that area.  Thanks for the reply Shari.  :-)

Thanks for the update, Julie. Were you able to take the dead dog to see if he had a microchip? Sometimes that's not possible, but as you know, it could be a clue if the other dog is from the same family, etc. Hope the first one you saw has somehow made his way home.

I drove by a few days later and looked for him again and left more food out.  I did not find him but I found a dead dog in the median right at MP 339 that I did not notice before.  This may have been why he was laying on the highway, waiting for his dead friend to get up.

Also he was limping a bit.  Hope he can find a warm, safe place soon.
