We have wonderful news this afternoon- Cadbury, the 10wk old Chihuahua puppy who was stolen from an adoption fair on Saturday- has been found! He was dumped in someone's yard who brought him into the Santa Fe Animal Shelter without having heard of his ordeal. Shelter receiving staff recognized him and called up to Espanola where we immediately went down to confirm that it was our little boy.
While our initial reports stated that Cadbury was ill, this was not the case. Our hope was that by publicizing him as ill, that the thieves would bring him to a local vet clinic where he could be recognized or drop him at a shelter where he could be traced by microchip back to us. Our shelter would never knowingly bring an animal with a serious, contagious disease to a place where it could be spread to others, so a huge thank you to those who were understanding of this idea. It was scary, and it was a gamble, but it worked and the little guy is safe and sound in the home of a staff person tonight and will head back to the shelter tomorrow. We really want to thank every volunteer and member of the community who helped us put the word out to find Cadbury. A huge thanks goes to the New Mexican for donating ad space to showcase color pictures as well as coverage in an article.
A terrible event like was so hard for all of our staff and volunteers, but your love, kindness, support and ACTION keeps our faith alive and there is one very happy little dog who says thank you more than any of us ever could.
