Española shelter needs blankets

The Española Valley Humane Society has put out a plea for blankets to keep dogs warm in their crates. The shelter is cold and drafty. Any clean blankets will do, staff members say.

Blankets can be dropped off at the shelter in Española or at the shelter’s thrift store, Barkin’ Boutique, next to Jinja at the DeVargas Center in Santa Fe. A volunteer also has offered to collect blankets at a south-side drop-off point, Toy Auto Man, 4774 Airport Road, from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

The Española Valley Humane Society, celebrating its 20th year, takes in and adopts out more than 4,000 animals a year. More than 1,000 are driven each year to adopters in Colorado. The shelter will host an adoption event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at Petsmart in Santa Fe, 3561 Zafarano Drive.

The shelter also offers low-cost spaying and neutering to try to reduce the number of unwanted puppies and kittens born each year. For more information about the shelter, or to donate, volunteer or to adopt an animal, call 505-753-8662 or click on www.evalleyshelter.org.
