Judiciary Committee Hearing to end breed discrimination

 OK, IT'S TIME for the next very important step!! We need EVERYONE at the State Capitol building (The Capitol is located at the corner of Old Santa Fe Trail and Paseo de Peralta in Santa Fe) at 1:30pm on Wednesday in room 309 for the Judiciary Committee hearing of HB 63 (it's 7th on the agenda so we do not know how fast or slow the agenda items will move) - please come out to show your support and speak on behalf of eliminating breed discrimination in NM so that we can begin the real discussion on how to create safer communities in NM. Free parking is available Monday through Friday at 420 Galisteo St., Santa Fe, NM

Encouragement from Rep. Carl Trujillo.
Dear Julie,

Thank you for your email urging support for animal protection legislation.

My family includes two dogs, Max and Lucky, (as well as several cats who run the place...) and I'm on the board of directors for the Santa Fe Humane Society. Animal welfare is a priority for me, as well.

With regard to HB224 raising animal cruelty to a felony, this is my bill that I'm sponsoring as a mirror bill to Sen. Martinez's identical bill in the Senate. HB224 is facing stiff opposition in the House Judiciary Committee, so if this is something you're passionate about, I encourage you to write to members of that committee with your perspective. With regard to HB63, I'm signed on as a supporter of this bill, which just passed the first committee with no opposition. My staff and I have been following this issue for awhile now, and based on talking with a number of experts on the subject, the evidence strongly suggests that breed specific legislation is not the best way to keep everyone safe from dog bites. The research is compelling that shows that there is no one breed that disproportionately bites, but rather that the media tends to give more attention to bites from certain breeds. I also know what most dog lovers know, which is that a dog is a product of how its raised and that there are many responsible humans who have pit bulls, German shepherds and other such breeds as peaceful members of the family.

With regard to the other bills you've mentioned, I haven't taken a specific look as they haven't come to the floor for a vote, but please know that our animal friends are an important part of our community and as a citizen legislator, I'm working hard to be their voice and the voice of the humans who love them, as well. I will vote to protect them whenever I can.
