Hello Everyone, I have not written in a while but now is the time to bring to all your awareness the going-ons with the homeless dogs and cats in Las Vegas, New Mexico. The Animal Welfare Coalition lead by Tina Holguin continues to move forward to relieve the suffering in Las Vegas and surrounding counties. It is a difficult and ever-so-relentless job. I am now in Santa Fe County helping support the coalition boarding project for Las Vegas dogs sponstered by Used Pets, Ltd. We adopt dogs in partnership with Dew Paws Rescue and others at Petco on St Mikes and Cerrillos every Saturday from 11 AM to 3:30 PM. These are the lucky dogs that we have room for in our 6 sponsored kennels at Braemarr Kennels. As you can guess, there are many, many dogs and cats in jeopardy of death at Las Vegas City Shelter. The shelter is simply too small and underfunded to carry the weight of animal neglect in Las Vegas and San Miguel County. They are doing their best at this time but there are no funds to increase the size of the shelter or number of employees. There are really no bad guys. We are all overwhelmed.
Animal Welfare Coalition had a generous donation from animal lover, Helen O'Brien of Las Vega, given just before her death last April. Most of the money was ear marked for spay and neuter with a small percentage for adoption costs. Santa Fe Shelter mobile van coordinator, Eva Paloheimo used that donation with care and foresight stretching it out for at least 9 months. The mobile clinic served the spay, neuter, and medical needs of Las Vegas and San Miguel County, giving hope to the citizens and care to the animals. The donation funds were depleted 3 months ago. We now are in desperate need to help to replenish funds for spay and neuter to keep the dog and cat population down and care for sick animals, whose owners cannot afford vet costs. The other terribly important issue is the animals in The Las Vegas Shelter. We can no longer spay and neuter them. They cannot go to adoption venues. The shelter overcrowds. Beautiful animals must be killed. And then more are created by intact animals. The vicious cycle that we have worked so hard to break is occurring again. And with it, all the suffering.
We deeply thank all who read this for your past concern and help. Once again I need to call upon you. It is my personal feeling that suffering of the animals is without county lines. San Miguel and Las Vegas are close enough to be seen and felt in the conscious of Santa Fe and surrounding areas. Out of love for life and the wonder of dogs and cats can you please help the Las Vegas animals. They are amazing creatures, forever full of love and gratitude. Please go to The Animal Welfare Coalition of Northeastern New Mexico to see the wonderful animals. We are also in need of fosters. Isis, Lexi, Cajun have been at Shelter since December. They are in the most danger because of this. Please help us by taking them into your homes and hearts by fostering until we can adopt them out. Also please sponsor a Las Vegas dog or cat that touches your heart for spay or neuter at Santa Fe Satellite Clinic. AWC is a 501C, all donations are tax deductible. Send to: Animal Welfare Coalition , PO Box 524, Las Vegas, New Mexico 87701. Please indicate: Attention Tina Holguin, for spay/neuter, and your chosen animal, if you have one. Thank you so much. Woofs and Namaste, Maureen
