Rescued dog dies of cancer
A dog who gained prominence after being rescued when abandoned at a popular hiking trail head last summer died recently.
Silvia Geiger, owner of Del Corazon, a Santa Fe boarding facility where Colter, also know as Mountain Boy, has been in hospice care, said the dog died last week of cancer.
The dog eluded rescuers for several weeks after he was abandoned at the Aspen Vista Picnic Ground on Hyde Park Road until D. Lily Azures, a seasoned animal rescuer, was able to capture him. He was taken to the Santa Fe animal shelter for treatment and then to Monica Morris’ home for foster care.
Morris struggled to find a right fit for the traumatized dog and initially found an adopter, but once he received a cancer diagnosis, the adopters bowed out and he entered into hospice care with Geiger. Geiger said the end was hard and it was time to say good-bye after he stopped eating and drinking.
“I am happy that I was able to give him the life he deserved all along, even for a short while,” she said.
Shelter reduces dog adoption fees
The Santa Fe animal shelter is reducing the fees on many adult dogs in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day and beyond.
The adoption fee for select adult dogs is $25 through March. Adopters also will receive a free bag of dog treats while supplies last.
