The dog suffered severe torture and abuse when his owner (allegedly) tried to neuter him by setting his scrotum and testicles on fire. The criminal complaint alleges that Dickey repeatedly tortured his dog, a shepherd named Charlie (Angel), on Jan. 23. The Rio Rancho Police Department's was notified by a neighbor who saw Dickey grab the cataract-blinded dog by his hind legs and drop-kick the dog several times and kick him into a yucca plant. The dog's testicles had been burned, according to the complaint.
Charlie has been removed but this man still has another dog and cats.
Sadly the maximum sentence is only $5000 and up to 18 months in jail. There is a petition online and they hope to get 5000 signatures to present to the judge to sway him/her to give the maximum penalty. As of right now there are about 2200 signatures.
I believe public outcry helped sway a judge in the recent case against the Aztec, NM men, Teddy Sexton and Corey Bowen, who killed their dog with a chainsaw in front of their kids.
My feeling is our laws need to be changed so animal cruelty is more than just a misdemeanor, but for the time being, a maximum sentence will help send a message that a person cannot get away with it.
