Does anyone know if there is any kind of special program, in our area, or anywhere in the state, that focuses on senior cats. I've pulled two senior cats this summer (with help) 17 and 18 years old, and there is another one currently in the Espanola Shelter (just emailed Nina).

Now, the stories on the other two were: Owner died, no one in the family wanted to take care of the elder cat.....

I am bighting my tongue here - you-all know that...right?

So, here is another one.....and if there is no program, can we scare up some funding to get something going? Talk to me!!!! Donna; Dew Paws Rescue.

Ulla Pedersen at Kindred Spirits may know of a connection. She specializes in the elder dogs, horses and poultry, and is so dear.I have played my harp there for an end of life care workshop and art show, and find her so warm and full of devotion to our older animals. Thanks for your loving

....Thank you both for your comments and support. Actually, there is no organization in NM, that I know of, that has a "formal" Sr. cat program with the funding/foster/placement commitment to be able to care for Sr. cats with all the medical stuff that they come with. F&F DO HAVE amazing volunteers who, of their own volition, will take special needs cats into their own home and, in addition to assuming responsibility for the expenses incurred, will take the occasional Sr. cat so that the poor-dear has a "home" and is not languishing in the cages. What we need, and F&F could be the van-guard on this, (as if they don't have enough to do!!) is develop a formally recognizable Sr. Cat sanctuary and (well) funded program so that when our old-girls die, their old-girls don't get dumped at the shelters 'cauze family members don't want to take responsibility for caring for an elder's elder animal. ~just a thought~

Donna, it's why I used to buy lottery tickets and may have to restart and hope and light more magic candles. I've always wanted to have the space and funding for a cat sanctuary. I love the geriatrics and, yes, they commonly are dumped.

Felines and friends I believe has a program for senior cats... I know they have one for cats with FIV that need long term care. Bobbi Heller runs F&F here in Santa Fe... you can leave a message at their answering machine at (505) 316-2281 and someone will respond pretty quickly.

Poor kitty kats... I hope they go to wonderful homes who will take good care. And thanks for getting them out of the shelter.
